Project summary

Kaylee Gonzalez

When I first started this project, I knew I wanted to do something in relation to gun violence and the way it affects young people. I wanted to implement more knowledge of gun safety and how it impacts students in their daily lives. Looking at the core causes of the issue, I felt the need to improve overall safety in the school and provide mental health aid. While still focusing on gun violence, I also saw a lack of awareness of the safety protocols inside the school. I designed a survey for teachers and students; teachers would answer questions related to safety. Students had wide ranging questions concerning gun violence, safety, gun control groups, and lockdowns. I was able to meet with my teachers and the safety director for Aurora Public Schools District.

With the information gathered, a goal would be to inform the students about the safety protocols in place. It would also be beneficial to take steps towards changing the protocol used in APS and Cherry Creek school districts into a more unified system used in practically every other school district in the state.
